Student Portraits

Do you have a "Boulder Creek Academy teen?" Current parents share their stories to help you understand how BCA can help (the names and photos have been changed for anonymity).

Claire
When she was two years old, Claire's parent's most useful book was Your Strong-Willed Child. Over the years, they also learned about attention deficit disorder and dyslexia.

By the time she was 15, Claire and her parents were deep in struggle. Angry conversations, thoughts of running away or committing suicide, breaking glass, self-harm, lying, and school detentions escalated into a painful cycle of fear and hopelessness. Now after 16 months at BCA, the patterns have changed, and Claire is confident, accountable, and alive. Click here for the full story.

Brian
After a decade of struggle, tests, and professional experts of every kind, Brian's family looked for an individualized individualized personal growth school when he was failing 9th grade for the second time. "Despite all our efforts to try to find the right place for him, he had come to view school as a hostile place and had developed his own defensive behaviors: hacking, sex, drugs, lying."

After a wilderness intervention, he enrolled at BCA and had a different experience. He tried the same strategies, but rather than expelling him, BCA made him deal with his behavior and those it had affected. By the time he graduated, he had become a true leader in his school, revered by his "little brothers" and other younger students. Click here for his parent's letter.
